She is Past President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the international organization of over 2300 Reform Rabbis. She served as the first openly gay or lesbian person in that position. She was also the first woman elected as President of the Southern California Board of Rabbis.

Thomas is the Senior Pastor of Cathedral of Hope, a 4,500-member congregation of the United Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, and the largest predominantly LGBTQ church in the world.
